How to get to Vieques

How to get to Vieques

By Stephanie Velazquez

Vieques is well known for having the world's brightest bioluminescent bay as well as spectacular white sandy, clear-water beaches. Respectively, Vieques is where you will find the most treasured natural settings in Puerto Rico. It is not complicated to get to Vieques. In fact, it is very simple and easy and everything will just flow after you choose which option works best for you and your family in order to get to the island.

Taking a flight

Taking a flight is the faster option. You are able to take a flight from San Juan, Isla Grande, or Ceiba. It takes about 20 minutes from San Juan, 15 minutes from Isla Grande, and 7 minutes from Ceiba.

Taking the ferry

It can be fun to take the ferry since you are able to look out the windows and see the ocean as well as some of the North coasts of Vieques as you get closer to the island. The ferry ride is one hour long and you can only take the ferry from Ceiba. In order to get a ferry ticket, you can either acquire it at the ferry terminal in person or by reserving online at www.puertoricoferry.com

Ferry Address

  • Marina Drive, Roosevelt Roads, Ceiba 00735

Once you arrive to Vieques island and you exit the ferry gate or exit the airport, you will notice the taxis and publicos (public van transportation). The transportation fee ranges from $10.00 to $15.00 per person one way. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get anywhere, with the exception of the Fish and Wildlife Refuge Beaches, which can take about 20 minutes. Keep in mind that some car rentals pick up their guests from either the ferry terminal or airport. You would have to make those arrangements with the car rental company ahead of time.

Don't be that tourist that only plans to stay one night in Vieques, especially if you enjoy nature. There is so much nature on this island that you simply cannot see and explore it all in just one day. Join a Snorkeling Tour, Bio Bay Tour, Boat Charter to explore the island from a different perspective, or Fishing Charter where you get to take your catch. We recommend at least 4 nights or more so that you can explore the Fish and Wildlife Refuge Beaches, go on tours where you learn the most, and take easy hiking trails.
